چکیده

TOTEM is an experiment dedicated to the measurement of the proton–proton total cross section (σ TOT ) at LHC, i.e. the probability that two protons interact at the center of mass energy of 14 TeV. In addition to that, it will also study the proton–proton elastic scattering and diffractive dissociation processes. TOTEM foresees specific measurements and experimental techniques which are very different from the other ‘general purpose’ experiments at LHC. A precise ‘luminosity independent’ measurement of σ TOT will be achievable in special beam optics runs by simultaneously measuring: 1) the elastic scattering rate at low transfer momentum, possibly as small as t = 10 GeV, and 2) the inelastic scattering rate with the largest possible coverage to reduce losses to few percents. The first goal requires detectors located into units mounted into the vacuum chamber of the accelerator, called Roman Pots (RPs), as the scattered protons are emitted at angles of the order of 10 μrad, therefore without leaving the beam– pipe. The latter requires the measurement of all the inelastically produced particles in the very forward direction with respect to the pp collision point; this can be achieved by using tracking detector telescopes with a complete azimuthal coverage around the beam–pipe.

The exclusive production of charged pions, are reported in the proton-proton collisions, where the π+π- pair is emitted at the central rapidity, y, and the scattered protons stay intact (p) without detection. This measurement is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 450 μb-1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of  7 TeV. Th...

Blois07/eds07 Proceedings

The LHC will soon provide proton-proton collisions at the unprecedented center of mass energy, √ s =14 TeV. This not only allows us to probe new regions of high-pT physics, but also low-x and forward physics. A selection of potential measurements are described to outline the prospects for low-x and forward physics in the ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, and LHCf experiments. 1 Prospects of Forward Energy Flo...

Tracking and Tolerances Study for the Atlas High-beta Optics

For luminosity and proton-proton total cross section measurement, the standard LHC Physics optics has been modied for the ATLAS experiment in the so-called High Beta optics with β*=2625 m. The high beta optics takes into account the whole LHC ring. Protons are tracked from the interaction point to the detectors. Tolerances on the β* are given and the effect of misalignment errors is checked. W...

On minimum-bias effects at the LHC

In general, minimum-bias triggers planned for experiments at the LHC miss a considerable fraction of the total number of events. We exemplify the rejection rate using the Durham model of soft high-energy interactions to obtain quantitative estimates of the signals arising from the ATLAS scintillation counters positioned in the rapidity intervals 2 < |η| < 4, and also from TOTEM detectors coveri...

Predicting Proton - air Cross Sections at √ s ∼ 30 TeV , using Accelerator and Cosmic Ray Data

We use the high energy predictions of a QCD-inspired parameterization of all accelerator data on forward proton-proton and antiproton-proton scattering amplitudes, along with Glauber theory, to predict proton–air cross sections at energies near √ s ≈ 30 TeV. The parameterization of the proton-proton cross section incorporates analyticity and unitarity, and demands that the asymptotic proton is ...
